BASKETBALL ACADEMY

BOYS & GIRLS 3RD THROUGH 5TH GRADE

OUR GOALS:

1. To develop a personal relationship with children that allows the introduction and reinforcement of ethical behavior based on Christian principles.

2. To provide quality and quantity instruction on the basic fundamentals of basketball in an enjoyable way which results in improved skills.

Any and all skill levels are encouraged to participate!  We  focus  on that every kid who wants to play is able to play!  We have provided transportation from the school by using unpaid servants of God and our church van. We have subsidized the program to make it affordable for all and provided scholarship funds for those on free and reduced lunch. Our unpaid servants also provide an after school snack and drinks in our church basement prior to going over to a county owned gymnasium across the alley.

DAILY ACTIVITIES:

• Immediately following school, kids are shuttled from the school via our church van or brought by parents to the church and provided an after school snack and drinks in our church basement.

• Then off to Memorial Hall for 40 minutes of drill work.  Drills are timed and efforts are recorded so each player can compete with themselves to get better.

• Next, a 10-15 minute “devotional huddle” where we discuss questions like “Who is God?”, “What’s the Bible?”, Does God Want Us to Be Good All The Time”; a different question each day.

• After huddles, more basketball drill work until 5:00 p.m. when the parents can pick the kids up.

We intentionally chose to operate our basketball program immediately after school as it creates a way for kids to participate (transportation provided) and still have time for evenings with family, homework, dinner together, baths and still have a reasonable bedtime.

It’s a mission of passion, a mission of caring, a mission to impact our community, a mission to change people’s lives—a mission in the language of God-LOVE!

Reminder the Basketball Academy starts Monday Nov. 4

Bring the family to an orientation meeting Sunday, October 27 at 5:30 p.m., basement of First United Methodist Church, 313 East Montgomery.  SEE YOU THERE!




First UMC Basketball Academy will be starting on Nov. 4. 
 Joel Johnson, KHS and his assistances, will be providing the 5th & 6th grade girls or boys 
 BASKETBALL SKILLS AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. 
 The hour and a half sessions at the Knoxville Memorial Hall building is for boys or girls and
 held two nights a week.  Transportation will be furnished at 3:30 from the school to the church
 for snacks and then to the Memorial Hall for practice.

Knoxville Survives Ballard Comeback In 3A District

The Knoxville Baseball Squad hung on for a 6-5 win over Ballard last night in the Class 3A district. Knoxville fell behind in the first inning 1-0 and with the Bombers up by one run, likely the key play of the game occurred in the bottom of the first inning when Knoxville turned a double play as Kaden Loscher stepped on third to get the first out and gunned down the runner to Catcher Tony Salato at home to retire the side. Knoxville tied the game at one in the second on a Bryce Zoutte R-B-I single, then the Panthers opened up the game with four runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead, and tacked on the sixth run in the fourth. However, Ballard would chip away and get to within six/five in the bottom of the seventh, but Zoutte pitching in relief struck out two of the three Bombers to seal the win. Coach Joel Johnson said Zoutte came in a stepped up in a big situation. Kevin Woodhouse got the win starting for the Panthers, he went four-plus innings giving up four runs on seven hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Ross Shelford pitched one inning while Zoutte got the save going the final two innings of no hit ball and three strikeouts. Knoxville is now 16-15 on the season and will play Dallas Center-Grimes Monday night at seven.

The Knoxville Baseball Squad closed out its Little Hawkeye Conference slate tonight with a varsity double header win over Oskaloosa.

The Indians beat the Panthers earlier in the season 13-3, but the Panthers have improved since then. Knoxville is coming off a win over Grinnell on Monday where they clinched no worse than third place in the conference and with a sweep would nail now second place in the L-H-C. First game is scheduled to get underway at 5:30

Knoxville Baseball picked up a big win at Grinnell on Monday night 5-2. Junior left-hander Bryce Zoutte was tremendous on the mound for Knoxville, working all seven innings to improve his record to 2-2 on the season. Zoutte battled his was out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth to keep the Tigers at bay. On offense, catcher Tony Salato and Freshman Calyn Bumgardner each has two hits and scored twice. Sophomore Jared McClung also had a pair of base knocks. Junior shortstop Ross Shelford added a clutch two R-B-I single with two outs in the third inning. Games like this one is what Coach Joel Johnson says makes winners out of teams. He challenged his guys after a difficult week last week to come out with a championship frame of mind. The win moves Knoxville to 13-13 overall, and more importantly improves the Panthers Little Hawkeye Conference record to 9-7 with just a home doubleheader against Oskaloosa on Wednesday remaining.       If you’re a baseball fan, you didn’t leave disappointed with any of the games that Knoxville and Pella played against one another this 2013 season. The two squads split in Friday’s action, with Pella winning game one in eight innings, 8 – 7, and Knoxville taking game two, 5 – 3. Pella capitalized on late errors by the Panthers to plate two runs in the bottom of the eighth to walk-off with a victory after squandering a 6 – 1 lead. The nightcap saw the Little Dutch hang tough despite giving up nine hits and four errors. A three-run third from Knoxville was the difference in the contest. Knoxville Coach Joel Johnson in the postgame talked about the gritty effort of his pitchers during this busy week. Pella scored the game’s first run, and Coach Jesse Jablonski said that that’s been one thing the team has struggled at this year. Kevin Woodhouse kept up his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 in the game with a double and two runs scored. Knoxville’s record is now 10 – 8 overall with an 8 – 5 conference mark, and Pella is 9 – 14 with a 6 – 7 league record. Pella plays Norwalk on Monday, and Knoxville is at Pella Christian for a pair of games, also this Monday

The Knoxville Baseball Squad split its games with Newton last night, losing the first game 3-2 in nine innings. Kaden Loscher was the hard luck losing pitcher as he went 2 1/3 innings giving up one run on three hits, one strikeout and one walk. He was pitching in relief of Bryce Zoutte who went 6 2/3 innings of work. In the nightcap, the Panthers won 3-1 as Kevin Woodhouse had another good outing going the distance allowing one run on just five hits, five strikeouts ,and issued just one walk. Ross Shelford went a combined 4/9 and Nolan Wallace went a combined 3/6 with two R-B-I. Knoxville is now 9-7 on the season and 7-4 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Coach Joel Johnson is proud and so are we!In what was described by Coach Joel Johnson as a “big win” the Knoxville Baseball Squad defeated Norwalk last night 7-4. The Panthers not only got a solid outing from Ross Shelford on the mound, but also Shelford helped his own cause by going 3/4 at the plate with an R-B-I. Kevin Woodhouse, who pitched the final three outs in relief went 2/3 with two R-B-I, and Jared McClung also batted in two runs. Knoxville improves to 8-6 on the season and 6-3 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Knoxville takes on Newton in a varsity double header tonight. -

Sets Up Big Showdown With Oskaloosa On Friday

The Knoxville Baseball Squad pulled the brooms out against Grinnell last night as the Panthers won 8-4 in game one and held off the Tigers in the nightcap 3-2. Knoxville broke the first game open with four runs in the second inning, and made sure of no Grinnell comeback in the fifth with three more runs to cross. Kaden Loscher for the second time in a week got the win in relief pitching five solid innings allowing just one run on two hits, one strikeout and two walks. In the nightcap, the Panthers got a solid performance from Ross Shelford on the mound and what Coach Joel Johnson called “winning plays” to get a 3-2 win. With the score 3-2 in the sixth, Grinnell had the tying run coming home, but Nolan Wallace threw a perfect strike from centerfield to catcher Tony Salato to gun down the Tiger runner for the third out.



 Shelford came out in the seventh to strike out the side to preserve the win. Coach Joel Johnson said the guys are starting to make the plays that are needed to win ball games. Shelford went the distance giving up two runs while allowing seven hits on six strikeouts and no walks. Kevin Woodhouse was spectacular on the mound for Knoxville on Tuesday evening, using a killer breaking ball to keep visiting Pella Christian guessing all night in a 4 – 3 Panthers victory. Knoxville tallied the first two runs of the game on a two-run, two-out single from Ross Shelford. The Eagles knotted it up in the third with RBI’s from Spencer Fynaardt and Jason Holwerda, but Knoxville came back in the bottom of the inning with two of their own off the bat of Jake Kendall, just enough to hold off Pella Christian. Knoxville Coach Joel Johnson said that there were several kids that played phenomenally last night. Eagles’ head coach, Nate Johnson said that pitcher, Dillon Branderhorst battled throughout the contest and gave his team a chance to win late. The win improves the Panthers’ conference record to 3 – 2 and they are 5 – 5 overall, while the loss drops the Eagles to 2 – 6 in the conference and 7 – 9 overall. The Panthers will host Grinnell tonight for a doubleheader, and Pella Christian is off until tomorrow when they head to A-D-M for a game. Under the direction of Coach Joel Johnson, summer softball and baseball for 5^th and 6^th grade girls and boys has been added as a new ministry to the 1st Church Sports Academy.  

Practice will start in June and be held on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings at the Marion County Little League ball diamonds.  Sign up now!  Stop by the church for forms or call 842-3712 for details or contact Coach Johnson.  Scholarships are available.

The postponed Celebration of the First Church Basketball Academy will be held on Sunday, February 3, at the10:45 a.m. service time. All 5th/6th grade participants and their families attended a “Celebration” of the completion of our second annual academy.
